Helicone

Overview

Helicone is an open-source AI Gateway and LLM observability platform for developers building production AI applications. It provides routing, debugging, cost tracking, and analytics. Founded during YC W23, Helicone processed 14.2 trillion tokens across 16,000 organizations before being acquired by Mintlify on March 3, 2026. The platform continues in maintenance mode (security updates, bug fixes, new model support).

Formidability

Score: 4/10

Helicone was a strong observability-focused competitor, but the Mintlify acquisition fundamentally changes its trajectory. It is now in maintenance mode — no new features, just upkeep. The team and IP are being redirected toward Mintlify's knowledge infrastructure vision. As an independent competitive threat to OpenRouter, Helicone is effectively winding down. Score reduced from what would have been 6/10 pre-acquisition.

Markets

  • Primary: Developers needing LLM observability, logging, and debugging
  • Secondary: Teams wanting a lightweight AI gateway with caching and load balancing
  • Geographic: Global (cloud-hosted on Cloudflare's network, or self-hosted)

Products

  • AI Gateway — caching, load balancing, failover, rate limiting
  • Observability — real-time request logging, tracing, session-based debugging, cost analysis
  • Monitoring — user metrics, hallucination detection, abuse detection, alerts
  • Dev Tools — prompt versioning, datasets, playground, HQL query language
  • Self-hosted option — Docker or Kubernetes (Helm charts)

Strategy

  • Acquired by Mintlify (March 2026): Team joining Mintlify to build "next generation of knowledge infrastructure"
  • Maintenance mode: Security updates and bug fixes will continue shipping, but no major new features expected
  • Open source: The codebase remains available, so community forks are possible
  • Mintlify raised $18M Series A led by a16z — Helicone's observability expertise will feed into Mintlify's AI agent knowledge systems
